Foot and Heel Pain –Renew Chiropractic
The most common condition causing heel and foot pain is plantar fasciitis. The fascia is the thick supportive tissue on the bottom of the foot, if this tissue is overly stretched small tears occur and the fascia becomes inflamed resulting in heel or foot pain. The stretching of these tissues can cause traction or pulling where they attach to the heel, which in turn can result in the formation of a boney overgrowth called a heel spur. Although on x-ray the spur appears to look like the cause of pain, the fasciitis is the actual cause.
Plantar fasciitis comes about when the foot tissues are overly stretched generally from a loss in your arch (pronation). Different factors can contribute to your arch loss, these include:
- Your feet roll inward too much when you walk
- You have high arches or flat feet
- You walk, stand, or run for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces
- You have uneven shoe wear
- You bowed Achilles tendons
- You wear shoes that don't fit well or are worn out
- You have tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles
Plantar fasciitis is slightly more common in women, and as we age the tendency for its occurrence increases.
Foot or heel pain of plantar fasciitis generally begins when you take your first steps after getting out of bed or after sitting for a long time. After walking for a short time the pain generally subsides, but can become somewhat worse as the day goes on especially if you stand for long periods of time or sometimes climbing stairs.
Treatment generally consists of balancing the arch using spinal pelvic stabilizers, speeder board adjustments, and doing stretching exercises. Manual stretching or massage, and acupressure are also beneficial.
